  • 'On-The-Day' Surgery (Mon-Fri 8.30am - 12.00pm)

    You can see a doctor any weekday morning for both urgent and routine matters using our 'on-the-day' service. This runs for 3.5 hours with appointments at 15 minute intervals. We do not operate a 'duty doctor' system; instead you are generally able to see any doctor of your choosing that is working that morning. We believe this greatly facilitates continuity of care and has always been well received.

    In order to ensure good access at times of need we unfortunately cannot book these appointments in advance, but do ask that you call the surgery after our telephone lines open at 8.00am to discuss your needs.

    It would also be helpful if you could let the admin team know if you would like to be seen downstairs.

    We also reserve some appointments for urgent or emergency cases during the afternoon.


    PRE-BOOKED APPOINTMENTS

    Bookable up to 8 weeks in advance, these are offered every weekday afternoon at various times.

    We endeavour to offer an appointment on the day your request it, but you may have to wait slightly longer if you wish to see a particular doctor.


    EXTENDED HOURS (Wednesday evenings until 8.00pm)

    These pre-booked appointments are reserved for those patients who are in full-time employment but have difficulty attending the surgery during normal opening hours (for example, due to working far away). These can be arranged by either telephoning the surgery or attending reception.


    ONLINE BOOKING

    We offer the facility to book and cancel appointments over the internet. You will need to register for this service at the surgery.


    TEXT MESSAGE REMINDERS

    We now send out text message reminders for booked appointments to those patients with a mobile number recorded. Feedback on this service has been incredibly positive but if you prefer NOT to receive such messages please let us know and you will not be sent any.


    CANCELLING APPOINTMENTS

    Patients do occasionally miss appointments and as we run 15 minute consultations this can be frustrating. If you feel that you no longer need to see a doctor then please let us know so that the slot can be allocated to another patient.

  • Phone Consultations

    If you need to talk to a doctor or nurse by telephone this is usually possible at the end of morning surgery.

    Telephone appointments are a convenient alternative for those problems that do not necessarily require a face-to-face consultation, such as minor ailments, prescription queries or concerns about test results.

    Please make it clear to the receptionist if you need an urgent call.

  • Doctor Availability

    The table below acts as a general guide for when the surgery doctors are present in the practice. Due to other medical commitments and annual leave entitlement we cannot, however, guarantee this timetable week-on-week. While you are welcome to see any of the doctors for a consultation, if you have a particular preference and are planning to attend an 'open' surgery we would always suggest telephoning first to confirm availability.

  • Evening and Weekend Appointments

    Improved Access service for evening and weekend appointments.

    Evening access

    This is a requirement (known as Improved Access) where practices ensure that from Monday to Thursday a practice in each area is open between 6pm-8pm. 

    To access the following appointments please continue contact us here at Catherine House Surgery:

    Mondays: 6.00pm to 8.00pm – Leatside Surgery
    Tuesdays: 6.00pm to 8.00pm – Chilington Surgery & Ashburton Surgery (rotation basis)
    Wednesdays: 6.00pm to 8.00pm – Buckfastleigh Medical Practice & Catherine House (rotation basis)
    Thursdays: 6.00pm to 8.00pm – Dartmouth Medical Practice

    Weekend Improved Access Service

    We offer weekend appointments situated in two central hub locations:

    Saturdays: 8.00am—6.00pm 
    Sundays:  8.00am—2.00pm 

    Consent to share your medical records with another practice:

    Please note as this contract is being delivered at scale across the locality, you will not necessarily be seen by a GP, Practice Nurse or HCA known to you from your practice

    To ensure that the Clinician you see has full access to your medical records, when you book your appointment the Administrator will ask you to consent to sharing your medical records. Once consent is gained the clinician seeing you on the day is the only person who will have access to your medical record, this consent is valid for 28 days from the appointment date. It is essential that consent is gained for you to be able to have the appointment. If you feel you do not wish to provide consent then it will not be suitable for you to book the appointment.

  • Home Visits

    Please telephone before 11.00am if you need a home visit. 

    We would encourage all patients who feel ill to attend the surgery if at all possible. This allows us to assess you in a safe environment with access to your complete computerised medical records and our wide range of diagnostic equipment.

    Visits, by their very nature, also require more time to complete compared to what can be achieved during the same period on surgery premises - often three or four patients can be seen in the time it takes to make a single house call.

    We readily acknowledge, however, that for some patients it is either impractical or indeed uncaring to ask you to attend due to the severity of your illness, or you are housebound or receiving palliative care.

    Please telephone before 11.00am if you need a home visit in such instances. This will help us to plan our rounds prior to afternoon surgery and avoid unnecessary delays. Describing your symptoms to the receptionist will help us prioritise the more urgent cases first. As doctors, we may initially phone you back to discuss your problems.
